LPG crematorium run by the Rotary Club of the Nilgiris
As a part of its service to the local communities and in a big effort to save the environment, the Rotary Club of the Nilgiris has established and manages a LPG operated crematorium in Coonoor. Every cremation conducted in this crematorium results in indirectly saving at least one 20 year old tree that would otherwise have provided the firewood for the same cremation.
The crematorium was build at great cost with funds donated by wonderful patrons and is functional since 2005.
Due to regular exposure to very high temperatures and the sensitive nature of control elements that make up the cremation chamber, there is a constant need to check and replace various components. In addition, the 100 ft tall chimney .protective structure around the chimney and the overall infrastructure at the site calls for periodic repair and maintenance.
While there is a nominal payment for each cremation, the amount barely meets operational costs. There is an urgent need for substantive funds to ensure the place is efficiently working and all sub systems/infrastructure is totally in a fit state. Due to its very nature, failure of any type during a cremation is totally unacceptable.
As per our current assessment, repair of Chimney, providing a safety tower around the chimney, maintenance of the Burners, Control mechanisms, Pumps and blowers and modernizing the cremation trolley calls for an outlay of Rs 9 lacs. We look forward to our generous patrons for support to keep the Crematorium in the most efficient and fully functional state as it is required to be brought into use almost always as a personal emergency of a family.
