Toilets and Water
Renovation of Toilets and provision of water through water harvesting in Rural Schools and Old age Homes in the Nilgiris
Over the last few years it has been experienced that there has been drop outs and extensive migration from the Rural & Tribal Schools because of the inadequate and unhygienic state of toilets for both boys and girls, Visits to many schools brought out that while in some cases toilets have been improved, there are scarce and unreliable water supply systems to support it thus leading to very dirty, unhygienic and stinking toilets. This even tends to encourage limited open defecation. A challenge that is otherwise being fought on a war footing across the country. The story in some of the old age homes are not very different.
The Rotary Club of the Nilgiris has committed itself to renovating toilets of boys and girls and also creating the Rainwater harvesting tanks, associated plumbing, improving the roofs that will act as the catchment for the rain water and installing relevant pumps to effectively provide the much needed water to the schools as explained above. The Club has targeted an objective of at least six schools/ old age homes in the current Rotary year ending on 30 June 2020.
While the estimates in different schools will be marginally different, an average cost of Rs 7 lacs per school for the above is being taken as a planning figure.
Donations to this cause will greatly contribute to improving the study environment, dignity and quality of life of the affected school children.
Please donate as per your capacity for this noble effort.
